frequently asked questions

Don’t see the answer to your question here?  Give us a call at 877-909-WOOD (9663) or email and we’ll be happy to help!

Are your products fire rated?
Most of our products meet fire ratings. American Wood Council keeps technical papers on code compliance.

Do you have prefinished options?
Yes. Engineered flooring comes prefinished, and we can prefinish any paneling option. Custom stains are also available please call for details.

Is your wood durable enough to install in high-traffic and commercial areas?
Absolutely. Jakarta Market Blend, European Beech, American Classics Oak and Fishtail Oak are particularly good choices. They are extremely dense and hard and the natural variations in the product allow them to take a lot of wear and tear and still look beautiful.

Do you have exterior siding?
All Jakarta Market Blend and Redwood solid paneling products are suitable for exterior use, and some doug fir products may be suitable (call). They should be back sealed before installation. Factory prefinishing with back seal are available, call for details.

Do you make stair treads?
We make stair treads all the time. We will provide your installer rectangular stair blanks made to your thickness/spec that are uniform and calibration sanded so that your installer can cut to correct dimension, edge to profile and finish on site. We do not make rustic top stair treads.

How can you tell if old beams are strong enough for load bearing?
We don’t rate beams, however, the beams we sell can be visually inspected for soundness using standard grading rules, and they can also be re-graded by WCLIB. For most applications, you can usually inspect for damage or decay and determine suitability that way, and you can over-engineer (use a larger beam) to mitigate any concerns.

Do you do installation?
No, we are material suppliers. We work with many qualified installers and are happy to refer you. Additionally , you can find flooring installers at National Wood Flooring Association website.

Can I install over radiant floor heating systems?
Engineered and solid wood floors are installed over radiant floors all the time, but they do require additional steps to ensure a quality install. The National Wood Flooring Association has specific guidelines for installers to follow to ensure a great finished product. They can be found in Appendix H in the NWFA document located on our website here.

How to I store the material before it is installed?
Store, handle and install per National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) guidelines available on the specs & resources page at

What finishes do you recommend?
We have done a whole lot of research in this subject and wrote an extensive blog post dedicated to this subject.

In short our favorite finishes are:
• Polyurethane: Dura-Seal
• Hardwax Oil: Osmo Polyx
• Oil: Woca Oil
• We do not recommend any Swedish finishes due to high VOC content.

What kind of glue should I use for installing over concrete?
Always consult your installer, but one product we have found useful is Taylor MS Plus Flooring Adhesive; it works as a moisture barrier and adhesive.

Do you buy old barns, pallets, etc?
Our goal is to give old lumber a second chance, in order to eliminate waste and reduce demand for new lumber. Our direct reclamation efforts are aimed at reclaiming from industrial sources, but we also partner with other reclamation / deconstruction partners as well.

When we are evaluating a new wood source, our goal is to reclaim in volume to 1) have the biggest impact on diverting good wood from the waste stream, and 2) develop a repeatable, consistent line of products our customers can rely on over time. The variability in barn wood can make that challenging. However, we do evaluate any and all offers. So the short answer is: if you have wood that looks like it might otherwise go to waste give us a call and we’ll do our best to help, either by acquiring the wood or putting you in touch with people who can put it to good use.

This wood is from pallets? Are they safe to re-use? Should I be worried about insects or chemicals?
Some of our products are made from shipping dunnage, pallets and dimensional wood used for crating. These pallets come to our Material Recovery Facility (MRF) from a variety of international and domestic locations. The exterior of the wood might be rough when it gets to us, but it is completely safe for re-use in our products. We do not accept (and we are not licensed to accept) any lumber that is treated with chemicals.

All imported lumber is heat treated to conform to International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM), which involved heating the wood to 130 degrees to kill any invasive plant or animal species. We work very closely with US Customs and Border Protection to ensure we keep foreign pests out of our country. Additionally, we kiln dry all imported and most domestic lumber for both wood stability and protection from insects. You can be confident that we safety very seriously and stand behind our work.
